THE LEGEND, EARL ANTHONY
EARL ANTHONY (1938–2001)
- Widely regarded as one of the greatest ten-pin bowlers in history.
- Bowled professionally on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour from 1970 through the 1980s.
- Won 43 PBA Tour titles, a record that stood for decades before eventually being surpassed.
- Captured 10 major championships, including:
- 6 PBA National Championships
- 2 Firestone Tournament of Champions
- 2 Masters titles (later recognized as official PBA titles).
- Named PBA Player of the Year six times (1974–1976 and 1981–1983).
- Inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1981.
- Inducted into the ABC Hall of Fame in 1986.
- Voted "Bowler of the Millennium" by Bowling Digest in 2000.
- In 2008, a panel of bowling experts named him the Greatest Player in the PBA's first 50 years, ranking him ahead of even later legends.
- Fellow legend Dick Weber called him "the greatest speed-control bowler who ever lived."
- Originally pursued professional baseball as a left-handed pitcher FO THE Orioles before turning to bowling.
- Remarkably, he didn't begin bowling until age 21, then practiced relentlessly—often 8 hours a day—before joining the PBA full-time at age 31.
